Pre-1906 Lenox Green Painted Sterling Rimmed Golf Scene Stein with Sterling Top - Great Condition

This hand painted stein depicts a golfer addressing his ball while his caddy, with a golf bag slung over his shoulder, peers off into the distance to follow the ball. The reverse side depicts a flag topped clubhouse. Although examples with the sterling rim are fairly common what sets this offering apart is the uncommon and elaborately decorated sterling top, with thumb pull, attached to the rim. The rim is stamped with a hallmark and “sterling 22”. There is an inscription on the top of the lid which reads “TW to H L W”. Perhaps an expensive gift at the turn of the century between spouses. Per the book Decorative Golf Collectibles by Shirley & Jerry Sprung, “Walter Scott Lenox founded the Ceramic Art Company in Trenton, NJ in 1889, but Lenox assumed complete control around 1895. In 1906, the name was changed to Lenox China Company. This pre 1906 piece contains the old CAC mark as well as the new Lenox name. 7" x 6" x 4"
