MacGregor Custom VIP Charley Penna Black Lacquer Driver
This driver has a custom VIP on the sole, os9838a stamped on the neck, and Charley Penna stamped on the crown. Red 4 screw insert. Never refinished but in great condition for the age of the club.
In this auction we have many pieces of Toney Penna's prized design work which were highly sought after by amateur and professional players alike. Toney referred to many of these clubs as "Reference Clubs". The most perfect rendering of a model, these were used to compare a production club to its ideal. Toney frequently made prototypes, experiments, some were mass produced, and some were left on the workbench. Many of his masterpieces were too costly or difficult to make, to be considered for mass production. One example is drivers with intricate face inserts, while beautiful, too many clubs would be rejected because the heads were easily ruined. These clubs are the best of the best, cream of the crop. Toney Penna handcrafted original pieces of art, many ONE of a kind.
