MacGregor 1940's Charley Penna Signature 11 Iron
Tourney clubs were the best of-the best for MacGregor in the 1940's. This was evident with set of woods and irons being individually recorded for the various specs of the clubs. This is the case with this Charley Penna signature model 11 iron which displays its recorded status stamped right on the club. This time period also marked the first time that the wedge, either pitching or sand, was included as part of a matched set of irons. This automatically sold an extra club for the professional. The Tourney club offered in this lot was also fashioned with a new feature of MacGregor clubs, the Neutralizer neck, so called, because it neutralizes annoying shock and vibration. The Neutralizer is a section of springy hickory, oil tempered and air driven into the tip of the shaft. It gives rigidity and strength at the neck and absorbs shock and vibration. No club equipped with the MacGregor Neutralizer has ever broken at the neck, was the claim of the company.

In this auction we have many pieces of Toney Penna's prized design work which were highly sought after by amateur and professional players alike. Toney referred to many of these clubs as "Reference Clubs". The most perfect rendering of a model, these were used to compare a production club to its ideal. Toney frequently made prototypes, experiments, some were mass produced, and some were left on the workbench. Many of his masterpieces were too costly or difficult to make, to be considered for mass production. One example is drivers with intricate face inserts, while beautiful, too many clubs would be rejected because the heads were easily ruined. These clubs are the best of the best, cream of the crop. Toney Penna handcrafted original pieces of art, many ONE of a kind.
