We would like to notify you of an amendment to Lot #1 Lloyd Mangrum Masters Runner Up Medal.  We are pleased to announce that we are now in possession of the ORIGINAL Lloyd Mangrum Silver Runner Up Masters Medal from 1940.

We were recently contacted by Lloyd Mangrum's grandson who informed us that the medal we previously presented as Lot #1 was in fact a gold replica that he had made as a family memento to remember his grandfather's golf career.  This memento was not intended to be offered for sale or used by anyone outside of the family. The famous golf bag that Larry Brooks purchased in a thrift store which contained this gold replica was reportedly a bag that had been stolen from a friend of Mr. Mangrum's grandson.  When the authenticity of the gold medal was in question, The Golf Auction began to persistently search for the truth.  When Mr. Mangrum's grandson contacted us, we immediately resolved the issue. We are withdrawing the gold replicated medal from the auction, and with the help of the Mangrum Family, we are now pleased to offer our clients the ORIGINAL Lloyd Mangrum Silver Runner Up Masters Medal from 1940.  This medal comes with a detailed letter from Lloyd Mangrum's grandson certifying that this medal was given to him by his grandparents.

This  original  Masters medal which was presented to Lloyd Mangrum in 1940 as tournament runner-up. This medal is  approximatly one (1) ounce, 1 ¾ inch diameter silver medal. The front of the medal is inscribed with the words Augusta National Golf Club and shows a detailed raised etching of the clubhouse. The reverse  of the medal contains the inscription Masters Tournament and "Lloyd Mangrum", "runner-up", "1940" and sterling ". The 1940 Tournament was the seventh time the event had been contested and marked only the third year in which it was known as the Masters Tournament.

This rare relic is only the second Masters medal presented at the post tournament awards ceremony to reach public auction joining Craig Wood's 1941 medal. The Medal is full of detail on both font size of wording and depiction of the Augusta National clubhouse" and the club's distintive logo of the outline of the United States with a flagstaff marking Augusta.  With movie star good looks Mangrum was a member of the "Texas Gang" that rode out of hardscrabble caddie yards to plunder the tour in its first Golden Age, along with Jimmy Demaret, Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. Mangrum played in his first Masters in 1940. He carded a course-record 64 in his opening round, a score that wasn't equaled until Jack Nicklaus matched it in the third round of the 1965 Masters.Demaret, The Houston Hurricane, would pass his fellow Texan in the second round and finish four stokes better then the runner-up Mangrum. This was the start of a great run of golf in the majors for Mangrum who would finish in the top ten in ten consecutive Masters and go onto win the 1946 U.S Open as highlights to his Hall of Fame career. Mangrum acheived all of this even though he gave up the prime years of his career during World War II which saw him land at Normandy, serve under General Patton, fight at the Battle of the Bulge and collect two Purple Hearts

This medal comes with a detailed letter from Lloyd Mangrum's grandson certifying that this is the medal given to his grandfather in 1940 by the Augusta National  as tournament runner-up 1940. This is iron clad authenticity  coming directly from a heir and grandson of Lloyd Mangrum.
