Leith Links Grand Golf Tournament by Professional Players May 1867 Photogravure

Here is the famous shot of the finest golfers of 1867 Grand Golf Tournament at Lieth Links. The gentlemen include legendary golfers Old Tom Morris, his son Young Tom Morris, Willie Dunn, Jamie Anderson and other prominent golfers of the time standing on steps with club in hand. Many of the 'Professional Players' were also club makers and were extremely influential in the game that had yet to reach the states in an impactful way at that point. This oversize photogravure contains the name of each of the pictured below the image. For more on the common 19th century photogravure process, spilling into the 20th century for select photographs, continue reading. The multi-layered 'Woodbury Gravure' (as stated in the bottom right corner below the image) represents a piece that was produced with the photo-mechanical process using a grained copper plate, which is then coated with a gelatin that is sensitive to light and has been exposed to a film positive. Next it is etched to produce a high quality intaglio plate with the ability to reproduce the detailed continuous tones of a photograph. This form of photography production was used mostly in the 19th century, with some fine art or specialty photographers using it in the 20th century. The verso is covered up. 11" x 8 7/8."
