Late 19th Century Scared Head Hickory Shaft Brassie Golf Club

This is an antique wooden golf club from the late Victorian transitional era, circa 1885-1895. The club is a brassie, characterized by the metal sole plate attached to the head. It features a scared-head or splice-neck construction, where the wooden head is joined to the shaft via an angled glued joint secured by a thick, dark cord whipping. The head is crafted from dark-stained wood in a shape transitional between the earlier long-nose style and more modern bulbous designs. A lead weight is inset into the back of the head for balance, and the face contains a protective insert likely made of horn or fiber. The sole plate is secured with six flat-head screws arranged in a circle around a central seventh screw. While web resources suggest makers such as Robert Forgan or Wright and Ditson for clubs of this pattern, no maker's stamps are discernible on the head, sole plate, or shaft. The club is fitted with a straight hickory shaft and finished with a long, hand-wrapped leather grip that is bound with twine at the top and bottom.
