Late 1800’s Original 'Jumping Golfer' At St. Andrews Water Color by Major Shortspoon aka F.P. Hopkins
Acclaimed artist 'Major' Shortspoon or 'F.J. Hopkins’ original watercolor composition titled 'Jumping Golfer' at St Andrews is presented here measuring 7.875 x 11.25". In the late 1800’s, Hopkins painted this scene with a Golfer leaping off the ground at top of backswing. The town of St Andrews is sketched at lower left. The painting has some toning from age visible throughout. Color fading is also evident from age. Paper is whole and strong with no holes or tears. Archival-Museum tape is used to affix the painting to vintage matting. Unsigned.
Major Shortspoon aka 'F.J. Hopkins' original pieces of artwork are in high demand. He was one of the first golf journalists, using his artwork to help tell the story. Upon retirement from the Army future prolific artist Francis Powell Hopkins a.k.a. “Major Shortspoon” became passionate about the game of golf until his passing in 1913. Major Shortspoon created hundreds of small 19th century golf scene watercolours prior to photography. The Royal Liverpool Golf Club has a website which features many of Major Shortspoon’s work and housed in their collection. These works and additional information on this important artist can be seen at Royal-Liverpool-golf.com. A recent visit to Merion GC revealed Merion has two (2) Shortspoons on display in their clubhouse collection. Values of his work fetch $20,000 or more according to the Winter 2018 No. 2 issue of 'The Golf - Journal of the Golf Heritage Society. Matted to 19" x 14 1/2."
