Large Oversize Lenox Golf Pitcher w/Gold Rim in Excellent Condition - 14 Inches Tall!
Boasting a noticeable size difference over its turn-of-the-20th century contemporaries is this excellent conditioned 14" tall porcelain Lenox pitcher, predating 1906 and carrying the Ceramic Art Company (CAC) Lenox base stamp. The towering pitcher offers a deep green hue throughout the wrapped lady golfer and caddie on the 6th green before a distant clubhouse golf scene. Intricate in design, it contains an equally visually complex handle and spout finished off with a step-down base containing a decorative ring. In fact, of the over 500 items that were priced in the trusted word for the 'Decorative Golf Collectibles' category price guide by Shirley & Jerry Sprung, this piece labeled as c.1900 with the Ceramic Art Company name (shown with the male golf scene variant) (#6) carries the highest assessed value at $6,000-9,000; It is matched only by a Doulton-Burslem bud vase and an obscure green enameled (possibly) Loetz vase as described, #66 and #190 respectively. The publication goes on to give the background story of Ceramic Art Company from Trenton, New Jersey which was founded by Walter Scott Lenox, his last name in which you certainly recognize as a main player in the category. Opening shop in 1889 with a partner, he would gain sole ownership in approximately 1895 and change the name of it to Lenox in 1906 after seeing the great demand for fine home dinnerware. The company continues to be a mainstay in fine pottery, the choice for Augusta National and The Masters with commissioned work for their dark green encircled clubhouse plates still found on the place settings of The Masters Club (Champs) Dinner Tuesday during tournament week. While this exact 'CAC Lenox' pitcher is not pictured in the Sprungs' book with different scenes each hand-painted and technically one-of-a-kind, that given value paralleled it at time of print in 1991. The 'CAC Lenox' branding is stamped in green on the base here even was crafted with a gold rim feature and is one of the few survivors like it. This considers of course: initial strict quality control and limited production of this 'special order' pitcher type, inherent fragility taking into account composition and size, and its age being approx. 125 years. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report in addition to the excellent descriptor. The search for your collection's most prized entrant was worth the wait.
