Keeler, Ross, Fownes, Tufts & Four (4) others Signed 1933 US Amateur Dinner John Hemmer Photo
A toast-worthy head table sitting the who's who of golf at the 1933 US Amateur victory dinner was visually documented in the original John Hemmer photo here. Legendary Course Architect Donald Ross, Richard Tufts son of Leonard and PGA President (1956-1957), OB Keeler, 1910 US Amateur champion William C. Fownes Jr., 1933 US Amateur champion George Dunlap Jr., father George Dunlap Sr., 1903 Pinehurst's first President and Leonard Tufts,
Known as the first U.S. architect to really design courses; Ross worked on over 500 in the United States. He came to Pinehurst in 1901 and was based there till his death in 1948. While there he designed and built Pinehurst Nos. 2, 3, and 4 courses. He also designed masterpieces Oakland Hills, Seminole, Inverness, Scioto and Oak Hill.
Here is a thick cardstock original photo at Pinehurst of eight Pinehurst and golf dignitaries side-by-side with their respective hand-signed signatures below, each high-grade dating nearly 100 years since addition. The verso carries significant handwritten notation confirming the occasion as Dunlap's 1933 US Amateur victory dinner. Hemmer's name is embossed with the photography studio stamp just below the sepia tone, crystal clear image on the right side. The U.S. Amateur Tournament was still considered a major championship of sorts, and drew a large and star-studded field. George Dunlap Jr. would go on to win the tournament. 9" x 7" James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot.
The Fred Simmons Collection
Co-owner with Arnold Palmer of the ProGroup out of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Fred Simmons was as networked in the golf industry as they came. There Simmons developed the Palmer Peerless, a then innovative persimmon driver. While at ProGroup he would assist in designing courses and travel the world with his knowledge of the game, passing it on to anyone that Simmons crossed paths with. "I have a good friend there. Call them and mention my name and they will take care of you," he was famous for saying to those close to him. Immersed in golf club design, Simmons became close with Ben Hogan while Chairman of the Board at his equipment company with his namesake. Simmons and Hogan were golf partners at Colonial, Brook Hollow etc. in the 1970's when they weren't in Hogan's Fort Worth plant examining clubs. Simmons would bring Valerie Hogan vintage photos that brought back memories and forth stories. Directly from his collection by way of Simmons' daughter Allison Schrock, we bring you The Fred Simmons Collection.
