Julius Boros' 1965 PGA Championship at Laurel Valley Contestant Badge/Clip

Three years prior to Julius Boros lifting the Wanamaker himself in 1968 as the then eldest major winner in history and less than two months prior to playing in the winning US Ryder Cup squad, Boros was issued this 1965 PGA Championship contestant badge with the time-period player-only design. The toughest credentials to obtain, before and after the event, this contestant badge was limited to the 165 contestants. Boros was a two-time US Open champion (1952 and 1963) and eventual four-time Ryder Cupper.

Ten years prior to holding the Ryder cup events of 1975, the Pennsylvania prize club of Laurel Valley hosted this PGA Championship. Dave Marr was able to get his named engraved on the famed Wanamaker Trophy, marking his career-defining major victory. Two strokes ahead of Billy Casper and Jack Nicklaus was all he needed. Presented in this lot is Julius Boros' contestant badge from the contest. This was also the final PGA Championship appearance for two-time champion Ben Hogan at age 53. After his near-fatal auto accident in early 1949, Hogan's legs could not withstand the grueling match play schedule, therefore he did not play in the championship until it became a stroke play event. This badge is presented in its gold, yellow and white glory and in very good to excellent condition.

The oldest player to win a modern major in 1968 at the age of 48, a record that would stand for 53 years. He was instrumental in starting and popularizing the Senior PGA Tour in the late 1970's. "Swing Easy, Hit Hard" was captain cool's motto, often performing best on the biggest stages and toughest courses.
