Julius Boros' 1963 US Open at The Country Club Original Sterling Silver Winner's Trophy

After numerous inquiries about this trophy, we want to confirm that it is not a restrike, replica or later awarded version and indeed THE trophy Julius Boros RECIEVED in 1963 minutes after winning!

Ownership of this elite centerpiece trophy will bear aloft that collector into a rarefied realm joining US Open winners themselves, anointing them the curator of a relic that is sure to be treasured and revered for generations to come. Sixty-three years ago at the 1963 US Open held at The Country Club of Brookline, World Golf Hall of Famer Julius Boros was presented this actual original Champion's trophy - poised to change hands for the very first time outside of his family. It was then at the conclusion of his triumphant 18-hole playoff over Arnold Palmer and Jacky Cupit this storied edition of golf's toughest test concluded.

The USGA crowned their US Open's eldest American king at 43 years and 3 months of age, ascending over five days and 90 holes from his rank as the prince of poise.

Tough the test was, playing into the hands of the veteran who remained stoic and unwavering during the deciding extra holes; more on that later. In this lot acting as a temporary museum exhibition, albeit digital, is the hobby-fresh grandest of awards - Boros' from The United States Golf Association in '63. Proudly in the center of his trophy below the engraving lies the USGA's Great Seal of the United States Bald Eagle encircled by the governing body's title and organization date of 1894 in shallow relief.

Francis Ouimet and USGA President John Winters were situated on either side of Julius Boros at the table during the trophy ceremony, pictured in listing photo two, were to his left and right respectively. Before the gentlemen were both this trophy and the large 'permanent' trophy - the former in which Boros could take home. This reference image was extracted from time-period video, then enhanced with coloring and definition improving technology with clarity at the forefront of its purpose.

Just a scant quantity of player Major trophies have ever made it into the golf collecting hobby, and we needn't expound further on the significance of the United States' oldest professional championship. Though most are more familiar with the look of the current traveling permanent US Open trophy owned by the USGA, the trophies actually awarded to US Open Champions in years past are of this embraced antiquated design. There is a famous shot of Jack Nicklaus after the 1962 US Open holding both the rotating/permanent trophy and his player trophy of this same look. The trophy, free from polishing as to show it's important original state, measures 12 ½” tall on plinth with a 5 5/8" diameter base. 'Sterling' silver hallmark is found on the removable lid of this esteemed dual-handled trophy. It is engraved: 1963 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - The COUNTRY CLUB - BROOKLINE, MASS. - WINNER - JULIUS BOROS.

That traditionally tough test became a grueling grind in '63. Arnold Palmer said these were the fiercest gusts in which he had ever faced - Saturday's topping 50 mph. New England weather was windy and chilly leading to the justifiably inflated score of 293, nine strokes over par for the best four day aggregate posted by any player at the 1963 United States Open at Brookline Country Club. Additionally the course itself recovering from a 'rugged' winter required dye to be added to battered greens and bad lies were abundant throughout the fairway compounding this with the naturally thick rough. This hard fought score was attained by Julius Boros, Jacky Cupit and Arnold Palmer on the 50th anniversary of the Francis Ouimet's victory at the same storied venue, with Ouimet looking on as previously mentioned. Boros In the 18-hole playoff that followed the next day shot a 70 to earn a companion U.S. Open trophy for the one he had captured in 1952. At 43-years and three months old Boros would become the oldest United States born champion in the long history of the event, a record broken later by Ray Floyd in 1986 and then Hale Irwin in 1990. Ted Ray, the only older non-American to win prior - by a month. In 1968 Boros would victory the PGA Championship as the oldest major winner at 48, only to be surpassed by Phil Mickelson at the tournament in 2001.

From the trophy, to the champion, to the tournament and governing body in which held it, this lot represents the most elevated level of prestige. Capitalize on this highly unique opportunity with the acquisition of the United States' national open major winner's trophy awarded to WGHoF inductee Julius Boros.

The Julius Boros Collection
The suave, all-around athlete with a natural swing, Julius Boros, was an accountant after college and didn't trade in his calculator for clubs until the age 29. Eighteen PGA Tour wins including the 1952 and 1963 US Opens and 1968 PGA Championship later, there's no question the World Golf Hall of Famer made the right decision - even if it was later than most of his cohorts. Boros led the PGA Tour in earnings in 1952 and 1955, gardening Player of the Year honors in 1952 and 1963. The oldest player to win a modern major in 1968 at the age of 48, a record that would stand for 53 years. He was instrumental in starting and popularizing the Senior PGA Tour in the late 1970's. "Swing Easy, Hit Hard" was captain cool's motto, often performing best on the biggest stages and toughest courses.
