Julius Boros' 1963 Masters Tournament Day's Low Score Crystal Glass Vase - April 6th
“(Jack Nicklaus) said, ‘Willie, how many of those 1s up there are red?’ And he said, ‘Just you, boss.’ ” This was the famous player-caddy interaction on Saturday, April 6, 1963 between the color-blind Jack Nicklaus and Willie Peterson in reference to the scoreboard, the day of Julius Boros' Masters Low Score Vase in this offering. In Jack's defense the contestants were experiencing borderline torrential downpour leaving certain parts of the course even unplayable. “Nobody thought anyone was going to finish the golf tournament,” Nicklaus said. “In those days, they didn’t go as far as you would go and then resume. They would wash the whole round out.”
In this lot acting as a temporary museum exhibition, albeit digital, is the most important award ever presented at auction for the 1963 Masters. Jack Nicklaus was given the others that would supersede it. A year in which The Golden Bear slipped on a green jacket for the very first time; it was the first chapter of his book that then shaped the tournament's history.
Though not a winner's trophy or green jacket, this prized award and similar ones for a hole-in-one, eagle or double eagle are presented for outstanding feats on the Masters. They are cherished by players and known in short on the Tour as "Master's Crystal." For Julius Boros this coveted Crystal Trophy Vase was earned with the low round among participants when he carded a 71 in the third round of Jack Nicklaus' historic first win at the 1963 'Tradition Unlike Any Other.' It was dually a podium T-3 finish for Boros, the best of his career! Jack received this award for the 2nd round Low Score Vase the day prior, still part of The Golden Bear's personal trophy collection. Following the Saturday round Johnny Hendrix of the Augusta Chronicle wrote, “Playing conditions were as bad, probably, as they ever have been at the Augusta National not to have play called off,” Boros carried the highly significant Major momentum gained at The Masters over to the US Open just months later, hoisting the winner's trophy for his second of three major victories. The suave, all-around athlete with a natural swing, Julius Boros, was an accountant after college and didn't trade in his calculator for clubs until the age 29. Eighteen PGA Tour wins including the 1952 and 1963 US Opens and 1968 PGA Championship later, there's no question the World Golf Hall of Famer made the right decision - even if it was later than most of his cohorts. Boros led the PGA Tour in earnings in 1952 and 1955, gardening Player of the Year honors in 1952 and 1963. The oldest player to win a modern major in 1968 at the age of 48, a record that would stand for 53 years. He was instrumental in starting and popularizing the Senior PGA Tour in the late 1970's. "Swing Easy, Hit Hard" was captain cool's motto, often performing best on the biggest stages and toughest courses.
