Jacky Cupit's 1961 Canadian Open Golf Championship Winner's Sterling Silver Trophy
Aesthetically awe-inspiring with every intricate detail thoughtfully planned out resulting in the museum-quality sterling silver award given to the winner of a national open and one of the crown jewels of Jacky Cupit's collection and career - the 1961 Canadian Open winner's trophy. Dual handled with enticing lines from top to bottom, patterning from the lip of the trophy loving cup through the neck down to to the fillet and foot. It rests atop a proper plinth of three tiered green marble. 'Canadian Open - Seagrum - Golf Championship for Annual Competition' on the frontside Seagram distillery was the tournament presenting sponsor for a number of years, their name in relief across the center. 'Won By' is found on the verso of Cupit's trophy, yet to be engraved with the improbable victor's name prior to presentation. 'Sterling' precious metal hallmark is stamped on the base.
It was a family affair that had never happened before. Rookie Tour member Jacky Cupit championed the Canadian Open by 5 strokes over, of all people, his brother Buster - and major winners Dow Finsterwald and Bobby Nichols. The significant National Open victory north of the border spearheaded a highly convincing Rookie of the Year campaign that also included several top-10 finishes, including a T-9 in his very first major championship the 1961 US Open. No additional convincing was needed, the honor was Cupit's.
