Jack Nicklaus' 2021 US Open Championship at Torrey Pines Issued Honorary Contestant Badge/Clip
With class and appreciation of the rich history in which the championship was built, two elements woven in the governing body's fabric, the USGA makes it a point to welcome past champions who are able to attend the US Open. They are honorary invitees, presented with official contestant badges for that year's contest. These are of the same design as those competing that week, down to the name font engraving for the individual in which it is issued to. It is a practice not dissimilar to The Masters and Augusta National's 'Honorary Invitee' badge, however those are slightly different in design. In limited capacity were patrons at the 2021 US Open and while it was purported that Jack Nicklaus initially planned on attending he was unable to take part in the tournament and watched from afar - he had a special connection to the winner after all. Jack tweeted his congratulations to Jon Rahm who had to withdraw from Nicklaus' Memorial Tournament after three rounds with a 6-stroke lead just weeks prior after testing positive for covid-19. Very few of Jack Nicklaus' major contestant badges have ever been offered to the public, this an anomaly - while the 4-time past champion didn't play in this edition.
