J.J. McDermott Little-Johnnie Atlantic City CC Putter

Johnnie McDermott was the first American- born US Open Champion. The first of his consecutive U.S. Open victories in 1911 came when the Atlantic City Country Club professional was 19 years, 10 months old, and the Philadelphia native remains the youngest US Open champion. Prior to that the first 16 Opens were won by British Professionals. Starting in 1914, McDermott was in and out of mental hospitals, group homes or in the care of relatives. It is thought that his mental illness could have started after his second U.S. Open triumph, when some major financial investments went sour. This hand forged dot faced putter was made by Wm. Winton and Co. and bears their diamond cleek mark. It has Johnnie McDermott’s signature on the back with “ Country club Atlantic City, Northfield N.J. and “Little Johnnie” stamped under the signature. About McDermott’s swing Ted Ray once remarked “I have never seen a man who, when called upon to hit a ball a given number of yards, can do so with such damned irritating consistency.” Here is a great opportunity to acquire a scarce putter honoring an historic figure in the story of American golf. 35"
