Hy Peskin Signed Ben Hogan US Open 1-Iron Shot w/'Ben Hogan 1950 US Open Champ' - Rare
Here we have an elegant black and white 13' x 10" photo, matted and framed to a size of 18' x 16' providing rich visual detail of Ben Hogan during conclusion of follow through to his classic swing at the 1950 United States Open. It is a high-quality Hy Peskin image that captures the famed one iron shot of Hogan (regarded as the greatest golf photo in history). The 'Miracle at Merion' saw Hogan victorious in a playoff with Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio, winning the second of his four US Open titles. We could go on in paragraphs setting up the situation that caused the opportunity for this image to be framed, but that is already known by most. For those who don't, simply stated Ben Hogan's first Major win following a 16 month recovery from his life threatening car accident was astounding. As seen through the lens of Hy Peskin on assignment for Life magazine, he found the supreme camera angle behind Hogan and framed his subject in a perfect cascade of contrast. It's all here the classic swing, his signature cap, and the huge crowd surrounding the 17th hole at Merion Golf Club. How special is this shot? Plenty spectacular in itself. Taken to a stratospheric level with recognition that this item is one of a scant few inscribed and signed with black felt tip marker in the hand of photographer Peskin which reads - Ben Hogan 1950 "U.S. Open" 'Champion' by Hy Peskin. Highest provenance resounds with typed letter on verso from Ronny Blaine Reynolds (son of Peskin). As he gifted this treasure to a golfing buddy. JSA providing their full letter of authenticity ZZ82356, has reviewed, this item and finds the inscription and signature to be completely formed by Peskin. This lot affords a seldom seen opportunity for the photography aficionado, or Hogan enthusiast.
