Hugh Philp of St. Andrews Middle Spoon (Circa 1840) Sourced From Harry B. Wood Collection

A Fine and Rare spoon ca. 1840 by the finest maker of ancient golf clubs, Hugh Philp of St. Andrews. To add to the rarity and exclusive nature of this fine club, it hails from the World Famous Harry B. Wood Collection with the shaft bearing the identification label applied by Wood to the clubs in his collection. Harry Wood began his collection in the mid 1800's and often met with Old Tom Morris who aided Wood with his acquisitions. This little blonde spoon (40" to the heel) with a head of Apple Wood, bears a fine hickory shaft (Philp was known for popularizing hickory, rather than ash, in his club shafts), and retains its original grip. For accuracy a minor crack is to be found on close inspection of the face. This does not distract from the beautiful lines this club boldly presents, a testament to the design work from the master maker of the feather ball era. The work of Philp was so respected that he was appointed Clubmaker to the R & A in 1819 and he crafted clubs for Allan Robertson and Tom Morris. The clubs in the Wood Collection benefit from this strong provenance, and are among the most desirable investment clubs for the historian/collector. Recently a well documented Philp club sold for $22,000.+ at auction. This figure bears testament to the value of the early games finest artisan's work which was prized as a collectible as early as the late 1800's, clearly holds that status in the twenty-first century and is certain to remain as the pinnacle of golf collecting into the next century.
