Hugh Philp Putter (Circa 1830) with Notches on Shaft

This putter bears the oldest iron stamp mark used by Philp with the First H and the final P set deeper into the crown of the club seeing as Philp's first known stamp was made too curved to fit the heads he crafted earliest in his noted career. This valuable information is obtained as the cataloger possessed the actual iron stamp for decades. The club retains it's original stout hickory shaft, along with a weathered sheepskin grip. Nice whipping showing tan color underneath. It is fitted with a visibly large lead weight bulging on the back of the club head. A Fine Early example of Master Craftsman Hugh Philp, ca 1930. This putter bears a Golden Thorn Wood head bearing original wood pegs with many coats of varnish, measuring 2 1/2" across the head, 5 1/4" long, and 1" tall in the face. Notches on shaft placed by owner for caddie recognition of appropriate player. While well used, this is an opportunity to own one of the Master's early designs. We close with the writings of James Balfour on the skills of Philp in his 1887 Reminiscences of Golf on St. Andrews Links, "Of club-makers no man has ever approached Hugh Philp." It measures from the top of the grip to the bottom of the heel 37 1/2."
