Horton Smith Original Type I News Service Photograph Wide World Photos PSA Authentic c. 1930s
This original Type I black-and-white news service photograph features Hall of Famer Horton Smith, the inaugural winner of the Masters Tournament in 1934 followed by his second Masters title in 1936. The photograph captures Smith walking on the course during competition with his playing partner followed by an individual carrying a leaderboard standard that reads SMITH EVEN, based off of contestant badge and match play likely at a PGA Championship competition - an organization in which he would go on to be the president of. Both men are dressed in 30's golf attire, including flat caps and knit sweaters.
The photograph has been professionally authenticated and encapsulated by PSA as a Type I original news service photo (Certification Number 85331362). A Type I designation identifies the item as a first-generation photograph developed from the original negative during the period it was taken. The PSA label attributes the source of the photograph to Wide World Photos.
