Henry Cotton Archive of Original Manuscript Materials & Photographs Possibly Used


This archive consists of original typed manuscript drafts and press photographs documenting the career and technical theories of British professional golfer Henry Cotton. The collection includes three typed pages with extensive handwritten ink corrections titled AN OUT-OF-DATE THEORY?, which analyzes the non-traditional two-knuckle grip and swing mechanics. A second manuscript, titled THE CLOWN PRINCE, comprises two typed pages with handwritten corrections providing a biographical profile of 1951 Open Champion Max Faulkner, referencing his boxing background, his irrepressible personality, and his landmark victory at Royal Portrush. This work's author Cotton was Faulkner's mentor and contemporary and references Faulkner serving as his assistant at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club. The photographic component includes six black-and-white photographs featuring Faulkner. These include action shots, candid images, and a notable photograph of the golfer performing a handstand on a golf course. One photograph includes a verso purple ink stamp for Y.E. NEWS PHOTO, 15-17 TRINITY ST., LEEDS 1 and a handwritten inscription reading Max Faulkner & Tooting at Moreton. The collection is accompanied by several small paper slips with handwritten captions intended for publication, such as The Born Athlete. The hand stand which Pat Pank watched against fear and Hit the ball flat out, along with a handwritten index card for photograph placement.

3. Lots with only ONE or NO BIDS at the time of initial auction close will close at 10pm ET

Extended bidding starts at 10pm ET, and all lots will begin closing with their own separate 30-minute countdown clock. Each lot will get its own 30 minute clock, which will extend by 30 minutes any time that lot receives a bid during extended bidding.
