Harry Vardon Signed 1920 Letter w/Photo & Histories Only 6 Time British Open Champion Nameplate
On the bottom half of his highly decorated personal letterhead Harry Vardon leaves his flowing signature and handwritten message. Well-chronicled in the industry is Vardon's comprehensive medal letterhead design, a hard-earned work of art in itself. This 1920 version is a competed comprehensive depiction of each of his record six Open Championship winning medals, US Open medal and even his 1911 Germany Open medal in great detail. Vardon updated his letterhead design as his awards collection grew throughout his career. World Champion Golfer of the year in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911, and 1914, Vardon conquered the US Open at the turn-of-the-20th-Century in 1900. Predating the 'Big Three' of Palmer, Nicklaus and Player, James Braid, John Henry Taylor, and himself formed the 'Great Triumvirate.' The three Englishmen combined to win the Open Championship 16 out of 21 times spanning from 1894-1914. Vardon, passed away in 1937, long before autographs were the popular pursuit that they are today. Compound this fact with his legendary status as both player and innovator in the game, and it is easy to see why any signed item of Vardon's that hits the marketplace is highly coveted. Vardon went on to publish golf instructional books. This was handwritten by Vardon on March 23, 1920. The example grades a 8/10 with great strength on the letterhead that titles Harry Vardon as 'Golf Club and Ball Maker.' James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authentication comes with this lot.
