Harry Vardon Signed 1909 Personal 'H. Vardon - Golf Club & Ball Maker' Letterhead
Golfing great Harry Vardon leaves his signature and handwritten message on the bottom portion of his personal letterhead, complete with a depiction of four of his six Open Championship winning medals, with two coming after 1909. Vardon won the Open Championship a record six times, (1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911, 1914) and was the 1900 U.S. Open champion. James Braid, John Henry Taylor, and himself formed the 'Great Triumvirate' of the three renowned British golfers at the turn of the century. The three Englishmen combined to win the Open Championship 16 out of 21 times spanning from 1894-1914. Vardon, passed away in 1937, long before autographs were the popular pursuit as they are today. Combine this with his legendary status as both player and innovator in the game, and it is easy to see why any signed item of Vardon's that hits the marketplace is highly coveted. Vardon went on to publish golf instructional books. The flowing signature was inked on on April 3, 1909 while he was still playing golf, and winning majors. The example grades a 9/10 with great strength on the letterhead that titles Harry Vardon as 'Golf Club and Ball Maker.' James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authentication comes with this lot.
