Donald Ross Vintage Signed Album Page
Every Golf collector knows the difficulty of acquiring signatures from the great course architects of the early 20th century who came from Europe to the United States, be it Alister MacKenzie or Donald Ross. Known as the first U.S. architect to really design courses; Ross worked on over 500 in the United States. He came to Pinehurst in 1901 and was based there till his death in 1948. While there he designed and built Pinehurst Nos. 2,3, and 4 courses. He also designed Oakland Hills, Seminole, Inverness, Scioto and Oak Hill. Presented here is a spectacular example of Ross' penmanship on a 4" x 6" album page which carries notation of Pinehurst and dating 1937 along with the signature all of which are in the famed architects hand with black period fountain pen. (verso of this page carries a pers. signature of another Hall of Famer Harry Cooper). An 8" x 10" black and white photo copy which shows Donald Ross at a similar time in life to when his autograph presented here was signed also accompanies this lot. **This is one of a very few examples with Pinehurst notation in Ross's hand to come to auction over the past 25 years!**James Spence Authentication (JSA) provides a letter of authenticity for the Ross and Cooper autographs in this lot.
