Hale Irwin's Signed 1991 Ryder Cup Team USA at Kiawah Island Poster
The "War on the Shore" 1991 Ryder Cup matches saw the US take back the cup, 14 1/2 to 13 1/2. This piece's consignor Hale Irwin got to play hero as Steve Pate, after suffering a rib injury earlier in the week, was unable to compete and his singles match was halved by rule. Irwin was taking on the fiery German Bernhard Langer, who missed a 6 foot putt that would have won his match and retained the Ryder Cup for Europe. Instead Irwin held on an halved the match, claiming the Ryder Cup for the US for the first time since 1983. Here is the tournament poster signed by each of the victorious United States players including the late, great Payne Stewart. Each in uniform black sharpie: captain Dave Stockton, Hale Irwin, Fred Couples, Lanny Wadkins, Corey Pavin, Chip Beck, Mark Calcavecchia, Mark O' Meara, Steve Pate, Wayne Levi, Paul Azinger and Ray Floyd. A signed letter of provenance from Hale Irwin comes with this lot. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot. 20" x 30"
