Hale Irwin's 1997 Senior Slam Cabo Championship Winning Golf Ball
Down goes....Jack, on his own course. It would be this very 'Titleist 1' that Hale IrWIN rolled into the 18th hole for a dominant final round of 6-under 66 and two-round total of 13-under for the PGA Senior Slam over the mighty Jack Nicklaus, Ray Floyd and Dave Stockton. The $250,000 was well earned. Irwin was nine shots clear of fellow Senior Tour major winners of 1996. Nearly double digits behind was runner-up Dave Stockton, followed by Ray Floyd at 141 and Jack Nicklaus' 143. Jack Nicklaus had designed the Mexico-set venue Palmilla Golf Club only 4 years prior to the heavyweight battle. Marked with black sharpie on either side of the '#1 ball in Golf' maker. Despite only being February 25th, Irwin had already claimed his third victory in the 1997 calendar year - with 7 more coming his way. The busy schedule was not by design, as the Senior Slam was rescheduled to a week earlier due to a tour conflict. This forced the top name on the PGA Senior Tour to sit out that next week's Tampa tournament in which he was the returning champion and as Hale put it "...in a heck of a quandary." This was the big tournament - not only with the purse, but in competition. In keeping with his tournament winning and hole-in-one golf balls that were saved, his wife Sally handwrote on a small note 'Winning Ball From Sr. Slam 1997 Cabo Palmilla Golf Clourse.' A signed letter of provenance from Hale Irwin will come with this lot.
