H. Vardon, W. Hagen, T. Ray & others Signed 1923 Headingly Golf Club Adel Booklet

Exceedingly rare signatures from top names in golf history are found on this 1923 dated booklet from the Headingly Golf Club. In addition to signing this during the 'Yorkshire Evening News' tournament, and a Sarazen vs. Hagen match in the semi-finals deemed the 'Championship of the World', stars Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen and Ted Ray added an accolade in their respective hands - seldom seen in itself! This 'Championship of the World' at Headingly Golf Club event had golf luminaries throughout the competitors list, signing this booklet in pencil just below '1923' are: Harry Vardon (6-Time Open Winner), Walter Hagen 'British Champion' (4 times over), Ted Ray 'Ex. British Champion' (1912), Gene Sarazen 'American Champion' (1932 Open Winner as well), George Duncan (1920 Open Winner), Aubrey Boomer - French Open Champion, George Gadd (1927 Ryder Cup), Charles F. White (Clubmaker & Burhill Golf Club professional from 1919-1938), Charles H. Hoffman USA, Tom Williamson (9-time professional winner and course architect of 60 designs), Tom R. Fernie (son of Willie 1883 Open Champ), James Ockenden, Dick May (Clubmaker & Club Professional) and more. This was saved by Joe Kirkwood and is presented in this offering as part of his collection. Inside this booklet is the chronicling of the Historic Adel and the Headingly Golf Club through print date and a mounted pen and ink print on the inside cover.

Home of the first 'Yorkshire Evening News' tournament in May 2023 that featured the semi-final Hagen vs Gene Sarazen match in the 'Championship of the World.' Hagen lost to Ryder Cupper Herbert Jolly in the finals 2 up. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot.

Kirkwood Family Collection
The same name and golf DNA, Joe Kirkwood Sr and Jr made history when both names were found above the cut like at the 1948 US Open. The Australian father and son found success no matter what they were doing, so that should come as no surprise. Born in 1897, Joe Kirkwood Sr. was the first from his country to win on the PGA Tour. It wasn't just once, but a lucky 13 times. A handful of top-5 major finishes, Kirkwood carved out a niche as a trick shot exhibitioner with his famous travels bringing him, with Walter Hagen, to Japan in 1930 - growing the sport there through exposure. Joe Kirkwood Jr. (b.1920) was also a victor on the PGA Tour, capturing three winner's trophies and even out-dueling Sam Snead at the 1951 Blue Ribbon Open. All the while the Hollywood actor Joe Kirkwood Jr. starred as boxer Joe Palooka in a popular film series, based off of the comic, from 1945-1951 and then again in 1954. These artifacts from the family tell the tale of Sr.'s travels and life through Jr.'s silver screen work. With thanks to Lark Kirkwood we offer The Kirkwood Family Collection.
