Gene Sarazen's Personal Earl Benham Co. Black Tuxedo Jacket & Pants w/Photo & COA
Worn and pictured in reference photo at the early 1960's Ed Sullivan Washington DC based event by Gene Sarazen was this very black tuxedo jacket with matching pants. Tailor tag from maker Earl Benham Co Inc in New York (original Harrison, NY native) is personalized with The Squire's Mr. 'GENE SARAZEN' stamped name along with the date of 'Dec. 1960.' Secured by the Sarazen family for nearly a century prior to presentation by his daughter Mary Ann Sarazen in this lot, this black tuxedo was in his formal wear banquet, dinner and event attire rotation and traditionally worn with a white dress shirt and black bowtie. Notice the photo matching, uniquely designed with a rounded Shawl Collar in the coat photos.
An ambassador of the game that lived until age 97, Sarazen was the first modern Grand Slam Champion, responsible for the 1935 Masters 'Shot Heard Round the World' and a finished with a baseline of seven (7) major championships amongst 39 PGA Tour victories. An Honorary Starter at The Masters just a month before his passing in 1999, Sarazen carried himself with class proudly donning a cardigan, plus fours, black and white leather cleats and his patented bucket hat - less than concerned about then current golf attire trends. A signed letter of provenance from Gene's daughter Mary Ann Sarazen comes with this lot along with the printed reference presentation photo. 7" x 8 1/2"
