Gary Player Signed 1962 Dickson Orde Sports of the Countries No.14 Golf Card - Gary Player's 1st Card
It's hard to look away from this one. On the Trading Card Database checklist in chronological order you will find this card as Gary Player's very first hobby entrant, the UK edition 1962 Dickson Orde & Co Sports Of The Countries Golf Card #14 South Africa. This is the first example we have offered signed, methodically done with his 'sit down' blue fine-point marker added up the right side for endless eye appeal. The PSA population report shows just five signed examples, not including this one of course. While it also mentions fellow countryman AD Locke (after) in the verso text, this front depiction is clearly Player over the heavyset Locke with very different physical features. Additionally, Locke usually wore a cap (especially in 1962 and if not plus fours) and actually didn't even wear a golf glove - the card depicting a black glove as Player would wear. The colorful card with a foreign artist's (loose) work was one of 25 from the Surrey printed checklist that spanned all of sport and the world's nations that even included baseball's Babe Ruth. If the 1971 Barratt is Player's official rookie card, this is at very lease an XRC and his first card in which he is mentioned...unless a pre-1962 card is discovered in the future - unlikely. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos for a detailed condition report. Vintage cards being signed by the greats is a Surging category with a capital 'S' - this card of The Black Knight and first International Masters winner a fine hobby entry from that subcategory. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity (ALOA) comes with this lot.
