Frank Stranahan's 1948 Miami Open Low Amateur Silver Tray - 1st Am. to Win Overall Event
The tray Frank Stranahan received at the 1948 Miami Open is inscribed low amateur, but that is like saying a Maserati is a car. It is so much more, and Stranahan was so much more at the '48 Miami Open. In the 25th annual edition of the PGA professionals playing in Miami, "Stranny" would fire a 66 to take the first round lead. He kept his consistent play intact over four rounds finishing with a 10 under par score of 270. This was good for a four stroke win over the field of both amateurs and professionals. It marked the first time in the 25 year history of the tournament that an amateur had captured the overall title. It was the fourth and final PGA win posted by Frank as an amateur. He would win two more Tour events after turning pro for his final career win total of six. The trophy Stranahan received for his work at Miami in 1948 is offered in this lot with the following inscription:
