Frank Stranahan's 1948 Gof-Fer Amateur of the Year Trophy - K.C. Golf 1st Year Awarded
In 1948 the Kansas City Golf Association held what was to be the first of an annual dinner in which they would honor the top amateur and professional golfer of the year. The award the recipients received was the image of a gopher cast in metal and finished in gold. This led to the new National golf award being known as the "Gof-Fer" Award. It was hoped that the annual award would serve as the "Oscar" does in the motion picture industry. But the closest this came to reality was most likely the play on words between golfer and gopher which would be used famously by Bill Murray in the movie "Caddyshack". Ben Hogan was honored in '48 as the top Professional Golfer of the Year at the Kansas City awards dinner held October 9, 1948. While at this event Frank Stranahan received his award as top amateur, which is offered in this lot, carrying the inscription:

The base of this 1st year honor is 4 3/4" x 4 3/4" and overall all the trophy stands 17" tall
