2023 September Golf Auction - Ends Sunday @ 10pm ET - Bid Now!
Francis Ouimet Signed 1935 Typed Letter to George R. Jacobus on White, Weld & Co Letterhead 9/4
Deserving recipient of the moniker "Father of Amateur Golf" and winner of the 1913 US Open at Country Club, Brookline's own Francis Ouimet penned his name on this postcard below a personal message he handwrote to a dear friend. Ouimet created one of the most storied victories in golf history, victorious at his home course. Adding to the lore was Ouimet's chosen partner in crime, famously employing 10-year old caddy Eddie Lowery.
In this letter signed by Francis Ouimet at the conclusion, Ouimet explains that while he would like to attend the 1935 Ryder Cup as an honored invitee, he had previously committed to play in the Massachusetts Lesley Cup Matches. Letter reads: Dear George:
I am very sorry to say that it was impossible for me to be excused from playing in the Lesley Cup Matches. I had committed myself several weeks ago and, as much as I would like to be with you, I am being held to my promise by our State Association.
I want you to know that I wish you and your Ryder Cup Team every success in the world. I am sure you will win the match.
With every good wish, I am
Sincerely,
Francis Ouimet. This lot will come with a signed Letter of Provenance from Historian Bob Denney of the PGA of America, proclaiming that this item comes from their collection.
