Framed Color Print of The Sabbath Breakers After John Charles Dollman
This lot features a framed reproduction color print titled The Sabbath Breakers, after the original 1896 painting by British artist John Charles Dollman (1851-1934). The scene depicts a historical 1582 event in Leith, Scotland, where two golfers are confronted by church elders for playing golf on the Sabbath during sermon hours. The print features a wide white margin below the image containing the printed title and historical text reading: "The Sabbath Breakers / In 1582 John Henrie & Patrick Rogie were prosecuted for playing Golf on the links of Leith every Sabbath during the time of the sermons." The artist signature and date "J. C. Dollman 1896" are printed in the plate in the lower right corner. The print is housed under glass in a gold-finished wood frame with a white mat. The reverse is sealed with brown backing paper, fitted with a hanging wire, and bears a white paper gallery label for the International Fine Arts Society of Deerfield Beach, Florida.
