Extremely Rare 1904 Maidstone Golf Club Long Island NY Trophy Tankard

Here we have a 9 inch tall copper trophy with the following engraving to the side “ Golf, Saturday Handicap [ logo MC] East Hampton L. I. “ The Maidstone logo at the time appears as an intertwined M & C. On page 105 in the book Fifty Years of the Maidstone Club 1891-1941 by Jeanette Rattray, there is a paragraph on Maidstone golf trophies. Excerpts include “ The first record of a Maidstone Club golf trophy seems to be 1896…. In 1897 J. Nevett Steele Jr. won the men’s handicap…. There was mention of “golf mugs” in 1898 … a Directors Cup was given in 1901 and a Club Cup for men’s handicap in 1904…. The club minutes make no mention of winners… We surmise the item offered here was for the 1904 Men’s Handicap. Lending further credence to this assumption is an article in the Saturday September 17, 1904 Brooklyn Life newspaper about activities at Easthampton/ Maidstone which stated “ The match play in the blind handicap golf for the club cup brought out a good field. Finals were played off by Mr. Whitney Baker and Dr. F. L. Ives, the latter winning the handsome trophy which was presented to him by Mr. Preston B. Spring”. ( Note: as additional support for this assumption we have also found an auction record of an unrelated but virtually same Manning Bowman trophy that was engraved with a 1904 date. The patina on this trophy, acquired over its est. 120 years of existence, has been left untouched because of its historical significance. The 5 “ bottom of the stein is marked “Manning Bowman 1103” The Maidstone Golf club is in Easthampton Long Island and is just 16 miles further up Long Island from Shinnecock Hills Golf Club (site of the 2026 USGA Open Championship) . Maidstone remains one of the most exclusive and private golf clubs in the United States. This trophy from the early days of Maidstone is truly a museum piece may be one of the only such trophies still in the public domain and would make a unique and important addition to a golf trophy collection.
