Early To Mid 19th Century Engraving of Clan McPherson “Golfing”
This 6 x 4 ¼ “ color engraving (not a modern lithograph) depicts a golfer from Clan McPherson addressing a (feather) golf ball with a long nose wood. Note the long slim style of the club.
In the background are two additional golfers with clubs.
All are wearing kilts with the apparent Clan McPherson plaid colors.
The engraving is titled “ Clan McPherson , (Golfing)”
Across the bottom the artist is noted as A. Ritchie and it gives his address as 18 So. St. David St. Edin[burgh ]
Alexander Hay Ritchie was a known mezzotint engraver. He studied with Sir William Allan at the Royal Institution in Edinburgh. In 1841, the artist immigrated to North America, working for a few years in Canada. By 1848 Ritchie had moved to New York City where he established an engraving business. At about this time he began to achieve a reputation as a painter. The artist remained in New York until at least 1891, after which time he moved to Connecticut where he resided until his death. Ritchie is known primarily for his genre scenes and portraits.
This can truly be considered a “hidden gem” museum worthy artwork that was completed by the artist sometime before 1841 when he left Edinburgh.
