Early 1900's The Cestrian Golf Ball Extra Quality Rubber Cored Tin Box

Mesh pattern gutta percha golf balls with 'Cestrian' in circle on each pole produced by a company named The Telegrah Manufacturing. Seldom do these balls surface and even less so this advertising enigma, a metal golf ball box with the painted green, black and white graphics once housing a dozen. 'The Cestrian Golf Ball (Extra Quality) Rubber Cored' is found across the top along with 'Frank A. Johnson - St Pauls Buildings, 29 Paternoster Row London E.C.' A wooden liner is found inside. Explained on Ernest 'EE' Whitcombe's letterhead, this early 1900 golf ball was the first rubber cored, English made of its kind, along with those with the names kite, buzzard and challenger. The 1924 Open Championship runner-up E Whitcombe was a successful club professional along with a Ryder Cupper on the British Team in 1929, 1931, and 1935. Long preserved in the collection of the PGA of America, there are overall signs of age and usage found throughout the composition.
