Early 1800's Scottish Long Lofter Club w/133 Shaft Stamp

Here is an excellent example of an early lofter club from the first quarter of the 1800's. The head is shallacked and there is an pattern around the top of the hozel. The hozel is 4 1/2" long, with the top of the grip to the heel of the club being 37." Of note it contains a run around the hosel, please inspect in the accompanying lot photos. There is no legible head stamp, with the only marking being the number '133' on the shaft. It was initially sold as part of the PGA of American's PGA Reach collection in 2019 July and does have distinguishing features, but does not have original paperwork.

Club expert Frank Henry shared his thoughts on this rare club.

“The shape of the head and length of the hozel typically is that of an extremely old club, pre-1850's conservatively. The diameters of the shaft and hozel are very large, with the heavy nicking in the metal hozel at the point the shaft enters being large and crude. The transition of the hozel to top of blade is typical of very old hand forged club heads, with it having a flat surface at transition point. The lambskin grip looks original, but could have been replaced in the 1890’s. The whipping is period correct. It starts out brown in color, to then take on a black shade from stain or dyes, and finally it is waxed prior to being used on the clubs. It is a very nice example of an early lofter. 38
