A collection of hardcover volumes written by Bernard Darwin, the prominent golf correspondent for The Times and grandson of Charles Darwin. The lot includes memoirs, anthologies, and essays published during the early 1940s and a modern compilation from 1984.
The first volume, At Odd Moments, was published by Oxford University Press (Humphrey Milford, London). The copyright page indicates it was originally published in August 1941 and reprinted in November 1941. It is an octavo bound in publisher brown cloth with gilt-lettered spine reading Oxford at the foot.
The second volume, Life is Sweet Brother, was published by Collins (Collins Clear-Type Press, London and Glasgow) in November 1940. This is a second impression of the first edition. The text is set in Fontana typeface. It is an octavo bound in gray linen-textured cloth with blue-stamped spine lettering and the Collins imprint at the foot.
The third volume, Pack Clouds Away, was published by Collins (48 Pall Mall, London) in December 1941. This is a second impression of the first edition. It is set in Fontana typeface and bound in gray linen-textured cloth matching the previous volume, with blue-stamped spine lettering.
The fourth volume, A Round with Darwin, was edited and compiled by Margaret Hughes and published by Souvenir Press in 1984. The copyright page states First published 1984 by Souvenir Press Ltd. (ISBN 0 285 62664 7). This octavo is bound in hardcover and is accompanied by its original green illustrated dust jacket featuring golfing silhouettes by E.W. Mitchell, with jacket design by Barfield Associates.
