Craig Wood at the First Masters Original Type 1 Wire Photo PSA Authentic
Encased in PSA's #84849460 Type 1 holder is this crystal-clear ACME Newspapers wire photo which presents a statuesque posed shot of the ruggedly handsome Craig Wood following the third round of play at the 1934 Masters. The image dating to March 24 retains its verso cutline which tells the story of the day entering the final round of play - "Craig Wood among leaders in Masters Golf Tourney Invitational Golf Tournament at Augusta, GA of the third round on March 24th. Wood had a score of 214 two strokes behind Horton Smith, setting the pace. Verso also displays traditional stampings and grease pencil markings as normally depicted on original news service photos of the day. Wood continued to put on the heat in the final round as it appeared he might win or at least tie for first, but Horton Smith sank a 20-foot putt on the 17th for a birdie, got his par on the 18th and won by a margin of one stroke. Wood relegated to runner up status in '34 came through with the 1941 Masters title, greatly to the satisfaction of all golf fans. No player ever furnished more fireworks than Craig at the Masters with his runner up in 1934, playoff loss to Sarazen in 1935, prior to the '41 Championship. This prized memento from the initial Masters presents with lily white borders encasing image of Wood. For accuracy small chip to border appears in upper right corner.
