Complete 1931 OPEN at Carnoustie Autograph Book of Entire Field
Scarcity of this outstanding comprehensive testimony of penmanship greatness cannot be understated, notated on the title page 'This book of which there is no duplicate, was auctioned at the close of the Championship by Sir William High, Ex-Lord Provost of Dundee, on behalf of the Funds of the Dundee Royal Infirmary and the Carnoustie Local Nursing Association.' Inked with steel-tip pen by 200 including Harry Vardon and proudly presented before you is an extraordinary 1931 Open Championship book with marbled endpapers featuring a complete roster of participating golfers starting in the qualifying stage to the final Sunday at Carnoustie Golf Club. Why this is significant, other than the obvious quantity? Key signatures from Harry Vardon and James Braid are on lines in this book - individuals that were unable to advance to the tournament itself. Each page contains 14 clean signatures with robust time-period ink with their two-round qualifying score at the end of it, a time in which automatic qualifiers were simply not given out for The Open. These include 1931 penmanship from: Ted Ray, Horton Smith, Tommy Armour (tournament champion), Arthur Havers, Alex "Sandy" Herd, Johnny Farrell, Alf Perry, Gene Sarazen, Abe Mitchell, Joe Turnesa, Joe Kirkwood, Jack White, CA Whitcomb, Aubrey Boomer, Alf Padgham, Percy Alliss, Tony Manero, Archie Compston, Henry Cotton, George Duncan, and MacDonald Smith. Condition upon inspection is good to very good, with very few detractors to speak of, as boasted by accompanying lot photos.
