Clay Shaw's Personal King's Stainless Iron Set, Woods & Putter In Bag Gifted By Babe
A businessman, Military officer, and CIA agent, but without question Clay Shaw's name is most known for his involvement in the JFK assassination being the only person brought to trial! While he would be acquitted on the counts, conspiracy theorists remain speculative on Shaw's possible involvement. The somber day will remain a where-were-you moment for the United States citizens of 1963 and never forgotten in history.
This is the story of this bag of clubs and the transfer of hands from Babe to Shaw back to Babe and now in this lot before you. At this meeting he is introduced to a local individual named Clay
Shaw. While they are discussing several business ventures, Big George remembers my last name and
asks Clay if he has any relatives in Tampa. Clay’s facial expression changes but remarks “not that I’m
aware of” and reverts to business and booze. George remembers Babe’s tournament and asks Clay if he
plays golf, he shrugs with a “yes, but not very well.” At this point Big George has an idea and then
remarks to Clay “do you have any plans after this?” Clay responds that his afternoon is open. George
then says come with me and meet my wife Babe. Long story short, Babe says even with your unorthodox swing there is hope for Shaw. Now let us
see what you are currently playing with, then Clay opens his trunk. Babe is kind but tells Clay these will
not do; you need clubs that fit the person. Let me call my old friend Irving King over in Shreveport
Louisiana, he is a master club-maker. Clay is intrigued and gives Babe the ok the Babe calls Irving and he
tells her to get certain measurements and he will start working immediately on picking out his best
persimmon and iron heads and when he is finished, he will ship them to Clay in New Orleans.
Fast-forward to 1963, JFK has been assassinated and there are multiple investigations, world press
coverage, with many suspects involved and one of them is our past friend Clay Shaw whose world was
turned upside down and would never be the same. Clay asks Big George for a favor while his health was failing.
Could he ship down his treasured golf clubs that had brought the three of them together over twenty
years ago and would Big George include them in the Babe and George Zaharias golf collection. George
assured his old friend that the set of clubs belonging to Clay Shaw would find prominence in the Zaharias
collection. Then George finished the conversation with tell Babe how much I miss her. 35" - 42." A signed letter of provenance from The Babe Zaharias Foundation comes with this lot.
