Chick Harbert's 1955 Canada Cup at Columbia Country Club Winning Trophy
Representing the United States on the international stage, Chick Harbert and Ed Furgol outmatched the 24 other teams in the 72-hole stroke play event in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Harbert and Furgol disassembled 'Champion Golfers of the Year' from Australia, runners-up Kel Nagle and Peter Thomson by nine strokes to win the 1955 Canada Cup and winner's trophy in this lot. Later known as the World Cup, this tournament began in 1953 with that year being what is found around the large rotating trophy as well as the player's version matching in design in which went to the victors Harbert and Furgol as shown in the reference photo found in this lot's listing. The following year of 1956 US would win again, this time the work of Ben Hogan and Sam Snead over another set of Open champions in Gary Player and Bobby Locke. This trophy consigned by the family of Chick Harbert has a slight tilt to it, tarnishing and additional adhesive on the tiered plinth in which his nameplate was later added and now comes with lot no longer attached to trophy. 'The Canada Cup - Presented by John Jay Hopkins - June 2nd 1953' is engraved in stylized font around the trophy bowl. 'For Annual International Invitation Golf Competition' was carefully added to the plate below. Detailing for the Canada Cup includes a layer of Maple leaves circling the base and two additional rings of detailing below and around the rim for heightened visual intrigue. Part of this lot and the Harbert family collection is Chick Harbert's personal pocket knife engraved with his name, as shown in the accompanying lot photos. 6" x 6" x 5 1/4"
