Charles Lees and C. E. Wagstaffe, The Golfers Key Plate, Line Engraving
A 19th-century intaglio line engraving serving as a key plate for the work The Golfers, A Grand Match Played on St. Andrews Links, based on the 1847 painting by Charles Lees, RSA (1800–1880). This identification plate features a line-drawing reproduction of the original scene with 53 numbered figures. Below the image, a printed index in three columns lists the names of the participants, including Sir David Baird, Sir Ralph Anstruther, Major Playfair, and John Campbell. The print bears the inscribed names Charles Lees R S A at the lower left and C. E. Wagstaffe Engraver at the lower right. A visible rectangular plate mark surrounds the composition. The work is presented behind glass in a tiered, ornate gilded composition frame with a black mat. The reverse is sealed with a modern paper dust cover and fitted with wire hanging hardware.
