Charles Coody's 1970 Masters Tournament Contestant Badge #39
Offered here for bidders is Charles Coody's contestant badge #39 from the 1970 Masters Tournament, the year prior to Coody's career-defining Augusta National triumph. Toughest of all Masters Tournament credentials is the Contestant Badge, this 1970 design with the red and white celluloid shield bearing the Augusta National Golf Club offered here. Receiving the invitation is an honor, and qualifying for the small field of the Masters is something that most golfers never do. These highly sought after individually numbered 'Player' badges don't often surface, with this being the example #39 and belonging to a then (near) future winner. The tournament was ultimately won in the final 18-hole playoff played at the Masters, where Billy Casper defeated Gene Littler 69 to 74 to win his third Major championship. The 1970 tournament was the Masters debut for a then 20-year old amateur Tom Watson, who would go on to win twice at Augusta National.
