Champion Jan Stephenson's 1978 Women's International at Moss Creek Plantation Sterling Silver Trophy

A new 'Tradition Unlike Any Other'? Grabbing headlines in the golf world, 'Ladies Masters', a Hilton Head-based tournament was announced in 1976. Sponsors were fully on board with the start-up LPGA 'Invitation Only' event set to share more than just 'The Masters' namesake! Just a month after the news, Augusta National Masters Tournament officials were said to have rather firmly persuaded the tournament to change their name. To avoid further protection costs, they did and 'Women's International' was born.

Future World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, and LPGA Rookie of the Year just two seasons prior, Jan Stephenson would finish one stroke back of Sally Little in that inaugural playing in 1976. It was by way of a Little 75 foot bunker hole-out on the 72nd hole at Moss Creek Plantation. “I still have nightmares about it,” Stephenson quipped referring to the event two years later. However on May 8, 1978 the face of the LPGA Jan Stephenson would card a 5-under 283 for a wire-to-wire 4-stroke victory over emerging amateur Beth Daniel, Stephenson's third on the tour. Runner-Up Daniel would also be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.

“I love to shoot in the 60's, it has such a neat look,” Jan Stephenson told the press after a 69 in her third round. This was following her opening round of 68 that was put together during not just inclement weather on South Carolina's Hilton Head Island, but the swirling winds of a Tornado Watch issued just the day. Those conditions forced tournament play to start a day late. Going into round two Stephenson had a to shot lead as one of only six golfers to break par of the 68 in the field. A four stroke lead over Daniel going into the final round, Stephenson and Daniel scored matching 74's and Stephenson was presented with the winner's trophy and check! This excellent condition trophy measures 14" x 7" x 7" and weighs ~1100 Grams.

The Jan Stephenson Collection

When Jan got the call she had been waiting for, in October 2018, she was in her office at Tarpon Woods Golf Club in Palm Harbor, FL. "Congratulations Jan, you're a Hall of Famer!" her friend Nancy Lopez, who had been calling for years, exclaimed this time. It's how they both wanted those calls to go from the beginning. The World Golf Hall of Fame had officially recognized her unmeasurable impact on the game of golf. Stephenson amassed an illustrious on-course resume that boasted 43 worldwide wins, 16 LPGA Tour victories, 8 major championships including national opens spanning the globe. In 1976 Commissioner Ray Volpe even went as far as saying that the marketable winner was the new face of the LPGA; and further popularizing women's golf she did.

If there was a Hall of Fame for Hall of Famers, Stephenson would be in it. You can also find her story that started as a young champion in Australia at the age of 9. She was inducted into the: Sport Australia Hall of Fame, LPGA Legends Tour Hall of Fame (first inductee), Australia Golf Hall of Fame, Florida Sports Hall of Fame and many more. Additional golf honors, recognitions and accolades she has received include: GOLF Magazine’s “100 Heroes” during the 1988 Centennial of Golf in America celebration, 8-time Handa Cup participant, and 1974 LPGA Rookie of the Year.

Outside of competition, the highly-accomplished Stephenson with an unmatched drive has been a golf course designer, prestigious 2017 Order of Australia Medal recipient, a model/exercise enthusiast and video producer (selling over 100,000 videos), Dancing w/ the Stars (Australia) contestant in 2011, and Tarpon Woods GC owner through Jan Stephenson's Crossroads Foundation. She was honored in 2017 by the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and is passionate as a Winemaker, and Philanthropist. The Golf Auction is humbled to present The Jan Stephenson Collection.
