Champion Jack Nicklaus' Contestant 1st Rd Signed Scorecard from 1991 The Tradition Senior Major Win
Jack Nicklaus was the man to beat on the PGA Champions Tour in 1990, just as he had been on the PGA Tour since 1962. Lee Trevino found the recipe for success that first year with the two. “I specifically called Barbara Nicklaus and said, ‘Listen, you keep Jack at home. For every tournament that I play in that he stays home, I’m going to send you a dozen roses.’ And I played 38 tournaments in 1990 and I sent her 30 dozen roses. He only played in eight.”
The 1991 PGA Champions Tour campaign was a different story, as the Golden Bear had just been sharpening its claws in 1990 (one major and two total wins). Jack Nicklaus won his first of three major championships that year at the 1991 Tradition, this signed official contestant scorecard used during that first round. Paired with marker Jim Feree, Nicklaus shot a sub-par opening round of 71 after a 1-over front 9 and 2-under back. Nicklaus' cumulative 11-under would be enough for a 1-stroke victory over the field and the runner-up trio of Jim Dent, Phil Rodgers and Jim Colbert. Jack defended his 1990 Tradition major title and gave the field a 2 week break until his next PGA Champions Tour major win.
