Champion Hale Irwin's 1985 Memorial Tournament 10k Gold Winner's Medal

Sourced directly from The Hale Irwin Collection presented in this offering is his 1985 Memorial Tournament Winner's Gold Medal - Irwin's 17th of 20 PGA Tour victories. Employing the cherished Professional Golfer's Association Tour 10k gold winner's medal design of the raised text "PGA Tour Tournament Winner" encircling the post-swing golfer logo depiction in shallow relief and offset by the dark, textured background. Jack's place of Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio remains a circled tournament on the calendar for players and fans alike.

"Although his winning total was an identical 7-under-par, Irwin decided, "I played better in '83. But (in 1985) I think I managed what I had better - keeping out of trouble areas. I don't think I played up to my capabilities, but I took what I had and played within my limitations." If he gave his 1983 performance a higher rating, Irwin may have appreciated his 1985 result even more. He hadn't won on the TOUR since the 1984 Bing Crosby Pro-Am, was 62nd on the money list and by his own admission on a down cycle. He partnered Jack Nicklaus in a practice round match on Wednesday and recalled later, "he shot 66 and I didn't help him on a hole. I'm thinking "how in the world am I ever going to get through this week?" stated the Memorial Tournament website past results page. Hale did and quite admirably - the understatement of the day.

The verso of this medal carries those individual round scores of 68-68-73-72 and tournament total of 281 in the center below top and bottom scrolls etched 'Winner' and Hale Irwin' respectively. Acquire this piece of PGA Tour history, a centerpiece 10k gold medal that is a constant reminder of excellence and Irwin's performance that week 38 years ago. A signed letter of provenance from Hale Irwin will come with this lot.
