Champion Hale Irwin's 1981 Buick Open 10k Gold Winner's Medal
Sourced directly from The Hale Irwin Collection presented in this offering is his 1981 Buick Open Winner's Gold Medal - Irwin's 13th of 20 PGA Tour victories. Employing the cherished Professional Golfer's Association Tour 10k gold winner's medal design of the raised text "PGA Tour Tournament Winner" encircling the post-swing golfer logo depiction in shallow relief and offset by the dark, textured background.
It certainly wasn't a comfortable win. ''When I needed to make the putt at 18, I have to say my spirits were very low. Maybe it held me together Hale Irwin told The New York Times. ''When we (himself, Bobby Clampett, Peter Jacobsen, and Gil Morgan) got out on the playoff hole, I knew I had to swim. It was now or never.'' Irwin (won) $63,000." Hale Irwin faltered on the last nine holes but made a 20-foot putt for a birdie on the second playoff hole today and won the $350,000 Buick Open.
The verso of this medal carries Irwin's individual round scores of 65-73-67-72 and tournament total of 277 in the center below top and bottom scrolls etched 'Winner' and Hale Irwin' respectively.
