Champion Hale Irwin's 1977 Colgate Hall of Fame Classic at Pinehurst CC 10k Gold Winner's Medal


Sourced directly from The Hale Irwin Collection presented in this offering is his 1977 Colgate Hall of Fame Classic Winner's Gold Medal - Irwin's 9th of 20 PGA Tour victories. Employing the cherished early Professional Golfer's Association Tour logo 10k gold winner's medal design of the raised text "Tournament Players Division" encircling the PGA TOUR shield logo depiction in shallow relief is Irwin's 1st place prize from the tournament held in the golf capital of The United States - Pinehurst, North Carolina. In a historically good performance Hale Irwin triumphed by five strokes over the field, carding 20-under par for the tournament record and his lowest four-round score on the PGA Tour of 264.

Sending a message that perhaps he already belonged in the Hall of Fame himself, Hale Irwin's blistering two-round total through Friday at the Pinehurst Country Club 1977 tournament was the lowest on the PGA Tour in over a decade! Irwin then proclaimed it a "must-win-situation" with half the tournament still to be played. While he wasn't quite Joe Namath on a poolside recliner, champion Irwin cashed in at its conclusion all the same.“It's (Pinehurst No. 2) not that easy a golf course,” said Irwin, who entered this event needing a victory to gain entry to next week's World Series of Golf. But, he added for the New York Times reporter and club groundskeeper. “it's perfectly manicured. “

The verso of this medal carries each of Irwin's round scores '65-62(!)-69-68' and tournament total of 264 in the center below 'Winner' and 'Hale Irwin' professionally engraved and engulfed in laurels.
