Champion Hale Irwin's 1976 Florida Citrus Open 10k Gold Winner's Medal
Sourced directly from The Hale Irwin Collection presented in this offering is his 1976 Florida Citrus Open Winner's Gold Medal - Irwin's 7th of 20 PGA Tour victories. Employing the cherished early Professional Golfer's Association Tour logo 10k gold winner's medal design of the raised text "Tournament Players Division" encircling the PGA TOUR shield logo depiction in shallow relief is Irwin's 1st place prize from the tournament held at Bay Hill and now familiarly branded as the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Despite carding a 18-under it took a playoff effort for Irwin - one of his three wins needing extra holes.
The unusual Monday fifth-day-finish was uncomfortable for Hale Irwin and his adversary Kermit Zarley. "Both men felt wrung out. Irwin said he had spent a sleepless night and had “bit a hole” in his lip. Zarley also felt the pressure of continuing ‘the playoff after a night's intermission. Like Irwin, he said it was psychologically difficult “to get started again," reported the New York Times. It concluded with Hale Irwin's name engraved on the gold medal here.
The verso of this medal carries each of Irwin's round scores '74-66-64-66' and tournament total of 270 in the center below 'Winner' and 'Hale Irwin' professionally engraved and engulfed in laurels.
