Here is champion Hale Irwin's actual first US Open win contestant bag tag with the original blue tape nameplate intact reading 'HALE IRWIN' from Irwin himself with a signed letter of provenance. The tournament with a comic book-like moniker was Irwin's first major win and the beginning of a three chapter book of US Open success. 'The Massacre at Winged Foot' is viewed as one of the most grueling US Open's and PGA tour events ever. Hale Irwin won with a +7 to par 287 the second highest winning score in us open history. It makes sense that contestant badge's consignor, as Irwin one of the toughest of competitors both the PGA and Champions Tours have had the pleasure of watching over the last 40 years was that of Hale Irwin.
Approximately three weeks prior to Winged Foot Hale Irwin told his wife Sally, "I dreamt I won the Open." "Good, honey," Sally responded as she later told Golf Digest. Irwin's thoughts after the tournament in which his dream came to fruition, a story of relief. "I've come away bloodied, bruised and kicked, but I've enjoyed Winged Foot. It's been good to me. If you didn't come away from the West Course and feel you had been tested to the fullest, you were missing something."
